Good expressions
Some expressions I've heard lately, and are worth writing down:
Chop wood, carry water.
This is a great phrase from Buddhism, that regardless of where or who you are, or how 'enlightened' or successful, we all have the same ordinary tasks to do: to survive, work, and to provide. It's the most common thread. If you can enjoy even the most mundane tasks, you are living right.
Fast nickel, slow dime.
Good concept. You can chase the short-term money, but the real value is stepping back and figuring out what not to do. And by not doing it, you will slowly build compounding wealth/success.
Penny wise, pound foolish.
You make good decisions to make or save small bits of money, but are terrible at long-term planning and wealth.
Rob Peter to pay Paul
You are good at getting out of a financial problem only to find yourself in another one, or owing someone else.
The juice is not worth the squeeze.
Even if something provides value or ends up in a positive result, the cost/time/effort/energy required to get the result.
It was a Pyrrhic victory.
Technically you won, but the damage incurred in the process was not worth the outcome.
Don't step over a dollar to pick up a penny.
Same as penny wise, chasing the savings of money is often a waste of time which = money.
"It's kind of like re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic."
Ha. When you're missing the point, and focused on a small task that will achieve nothing in the big picture.
"It's of no consequence, like we're pissing in the ocean."
Same as above.
"I give him a wide birth."
I steer clear of this person.
"He's the kind of guy to use a sledgehammer to crack a peanut."
When you're too fancy or use over-the-top methods to achieve a basic task.
"Idle hands are the devil's workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece. An evil man sows strife; gossip separates the best of friends. Wickedness loves." Proverbs 16:27-29
Explains itself. Boredom, whether conscious or not, is the root to problems. Free time is not all that it's cracked up to be. Stay busy with good and challenging tasks that test you.
